New router delivered, can old one continue to be used if preferred?

Hi.  I had ot sort out my Dad's plusnet account as he was being overcharged due to being out of contract.  We set up a new contract and they have sent a new router to be plugged in once his new faster broadband is activated.

His question is can he just continue to use the older router as he doesn't like change and doesn't have any issues with the old one anyway?  Or will new broadband only work with his new router?

Thanks.

@carolinemarbles Has your dad moved from ADSL to FTTC, or has he stayed on his old connection? Which router is he currently using?

Hmm.  Not entirely sure . . ..The new router is a Plusnet Hub Two DSL so I don't think so but can't be sure.  They just said as we were setting it up as new (because I put it in my name to make it easier to deal with things on his behalf) he would have a faster speed and a new router would arrived.

Appreciate your reply by the way.

OK - a little difficult to really advise without some firmer detail, but if he has had the previous router for a while, the Hub2 will be an improvement.

Thanks.  He's had it at least 2 years, probably much more than that.  So he should use the new one, but old one will work for a while if he wants to wait until a more convenient time when someone can pop to do it?

I suspect - but in the absence of concrete info can't be sure - that his old one will be OK until you are able plug in the new one.

@carolinemarbles

The contract letter/email should advise you of the service you have selected.

Hub Two DSL would suggest Unlimited Fibre (extra) which includes land line or Fibre without land line, both are FTTC.

You can identify his current Hub here -> https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/router-information/

So if you are either ADSL or FTTC you can use the Hub two.

@carolinemarbles

If you look at the link in @Dan_the_Van's post you should be able to recognise the current hub. If it's a Plusnet Hub 2 then they are directly interchangeable. The difference is that the later Hub 2 has better WiFi performance and more programmable features, which you won't be using at present anyway.

If it's an upgrade from ADSL to fibre and he has one of the other hubs then it's not so straight forward and he would be better off waiting and swapping to the new hub.

Forgot to add, if you are upgrading to FTTC and the current router is not a Hub One then it will not work, Hub Zero or the Technicolor 582n only work on ADSL.
