Plusnet Two Router - is the WiFi bad?

Hello all!
Joined Plusnet this week after years with Sky.
I was on Sky Full Fibre 145mbps before switching to Plusnet 145mbps.
Now the SR-203 isn't the best router from Sky but via WiFi I would get full speed on my phone.
The Two router however seems to be hitting around 90 - 95mbps but no higher.
I should add that my house is currently empty so nothing else using bandwidth.
Is the WiFi speed that bad?! My phone gets full speed at other houses so not sure what's happening. Thanks.

@Giggsy  Welcome to the Plusnet Community Fora.

I can’t comment on how well the Hub 2 compares with the Sky device. The Hub 2 is a BTSmarthub 2 with tweaked firmware.

Unfortunately you can’t split the 2.4 and 5GHz wireless bands and I suspect that the difference is being caused by your phone using the lower frequency band.

As an experiment try switching off WiFi on your phone and switch it back on when close to the Hub to see if it improves your speed back at your test location.

Re: Plusnet Two Router - is the WiFi bad?

Thanks @Baldrick1.
I would have thought the 2.4ghz band would easily connect at higher speed and certainly saturate a 145mbps connection.
The longer range as opposed to 5ghz making it more useful around the house.
I read 7 antennae I the specs, but the speed drops off dramatically once across the room.
Really disappointed with it!

Re: Plusnet Two Router - is the WiFi bad?

From google

The SR203 and the Plusnet Hub 2 are both wireless routers, but they differ in performance, features, and suitability for different home sizes:

SR203
This dual band wireless router is designed to improve gaming and streaming, and offers wider reach and stronger signals.
Plusnet Hub 2
This router is suitable for most users, but may not be ideal for larger homes or for those who need advanced network features. It's designed to select the best performing channel for both the 2.4 GHz and 5GHz bands.
Here are some more details about each router:
SR203
This router offers advanced connectivity and dual band technology to improve network performance.

Plusnet Hub 2
This router is the only one currently offered by Plusnet for all of its broadband packages. It's a decent router, but it doesn't support WiFi 6 or more advanced network features. If you have a larger home or specific needs, you can use your own router and use the Plusnet Hub 2 as a modem.
You can check out but you can never leave ( easily)

Re: Plusnet Two Router - is the WiFi bad?

The BT Smart Hub 2 is said to have good wireless coverage, and the Plusnet Two Router is the same components with different software.
My experience of the BT Smart Hub 2 is that wireless coverage is very good for an ISP provided router.
Maybe I have a bad unit, but a 2.4ghz connection should be capable of more than 145mbps when 6 feet from it.
The SR-203 from Sky has worse WiFi coverage than the BT Smart Hub 2 IME.
Disappointed Plusnet!

@Giggsy

The 2.4GHz band can get pretty congested. Have you had a look to see if it's likely that there's  co-channel interference using a WiFi sniffer? I use WiFi Analyzer on an Android phone.

Re: Plusnet Two Router - is the WiFi bad?

When I was living full time in the house with other devices connected I would get full speed.
The house currently has nothing in it (renovating) but will be back in it soon, so, if it's struggling now, in dread to think how it will cope with other devices connected.
The neighbours WiFi gets picked up by WiFi Analyser but that situation is the same as before.
To not get full speed when stood 6 feet away, with nothing else connected and no other electronic devices in the house I find off!

Re: Plusnet Two Router - is the WiFi bad?

Have you tried simply switching 2.5GHz Wi-Fi off in your Plusnet Hub2 router, leaving 5Ghz on?

Re: Plusnet Two Router - is the WiFi bad?

I haven't, but doing so brings it's own limitations once I move back in full time. Some devices having to use that frequency.
For whatever reason, the 2.4ghz performance of the Hub Two is lacking.

The customer in the above discussion is getting 400mbps over 2.4ghz WiFi, so 145mbps should be a piece of cake.
