What cable do I need?

I've just moved house. My previous house had an ONT box, and a standard ethernet cable between the ONT and the plusnet hub 2 - into the WAN port (Ethernet4).

My new place doesn't have an ONT, just a standard master socket 4c - My service has been moved and activated, but got no service when I connected the RJ45 port from the master socket to the WAN port on the hub.

Some googling suggests I need to use the "Broadband" grey socket on the back of the hub 2.

I have 2 questions -

A) Can I get this working with what I currently have - Can I use the WAN port in this configuration?

B) If not, what cable do I need, RJ45 to RJ11?

Re: What cable do I need?

Your google search suggests correctly - you connect the grey cable supplied with the router between the master socket and the grey port on the Hub. The WAN port is for an FTTP connection - as you had previously, and does not work for FTTC which you now have.

Re: What cable do I need?

I see. I no longer have any of the stuff that came with the router.

So can I use the RJ45 on the master socket to the RJ11 on the Hub, or do I need to get a filter, plug that into the phone socket, and use RJ11 to Rj11 from the filter to the hub?

Re: What cable do I need?

Is your socket a single, or double? If it is a singe, you will need (a) a filter and (b) an RJ11 cable -as advised by @Mr_Paul , above.

Re: What cable do I need?

It's a double - RJ45 on the left, old style phone socket on the right.

Re: What cable do I need?

OK - in that case RJ11 between the grey port on the Hub and the left-hand connection on the socket- - no filter required.

Fix

RJ45 on the left,

Its not really an Rj45 , its an RJ11 , its just that an RJ45 will fit!.

If you've got a Screwfix nearby , then this should do the job https://www.screwfix.com/p/philex-black-unshielded-rj11-76702hs-ethernet-cable-3m/38511#product_addi...

but got no service when I connected the RJ45 port from the master socket to the WAN port on the hub.

Lets hope that hasn't damaged the Hub , there's 50v DC on the DSL connection, not sure what the WAN port will make of that ?

OHHHHHHHhhhhhhhh OK, that makes things easier. I can get my hands on an RJ11 easily.

Yikes. I think it's OK. I was still able to log in to the router and check the broadband login details etc, so it didn't go pop!
