Flexible nanotech, telepresence robots and holograms could all be everyday sights in the office of 2030, experts have told Plusnet. We have combined with a team of leading futurists to predict how the classic drab, David Brent office will look in the future. Squeaky office chairs and flickering light bulbs will be a thing of the past, with the traditional gloomy workspaces evolving into technological, green hubs. Rather than bulky desks, Glen Hiemstra, founder and CEO of Futurist.com predicts that these objects will be made with malleable flubber-like materials: “Offices will have no furniture at all - simply flexible nanotech that can be formed into whatever you need at the moment - something to sit on, a desk or a conference table.” There will also be no chance of being late to a meeting or having to run the tea round, as virtual reality and artificial intelligence will take over, allowing the average Joe to sit on his couch at home. Peter Cochrane, futurist and co-founder of future trend analysis company Cochrane Associates, added: “People will be augmented by robots and artificial intelligence. Some will find that their boss is no longer human, but a machine embodying decades of experience and wisdom.” Bringing the outside in, offices will also be filled with plants and natural light, creating spaces that even Sir Attenborough himself would enjoy. Doctors, chiropractors and even psychologists could also be at-hand, offering first-class service for bad backs and stressed staff. Taking a leaf out of Google’s book, companies may also inject some fun into the office by investing in slides, hammocks and sleep pods, chill spaces and virtual reality gaming rooms.
