FF happened without a hitch :)

I hope good news posts are OK...

OR arrived three hours early this morning - perfectly on time for me as I was literally just marking the cross on the outside wall where I wanted them to drill through, as the van pulled up.

The OR engineer agreed to shove the cable though exactly where I wanted - into a cupboard that already had a hole through the inside bricks full of network cables. He didn't look impressed at first because of all the existing cables there, but was fine once I offered to drill the outside hole myself and on my head be it. Probably the easiest job he had all day, apart from trying to hammer nails into my rock hard mortar. I'll have to drill and plug those up the wall tomorrow to clip the cable; the half-bent, sticking out nails won't last. Can't blame him, the mortar here is nasty.

The install is now hidden away neatly in the little hallway cupboard, along with my VOIP DECT base and some other bits, all powered by PoE. Even the ONT is connected through a PoE adapter and all the main networking and storage kit is on a UPS. Power cuts are annoyingly frequent here.

The other OR guy on the cherry picker had a harder time due to trees that made reaching the pole difficult, but he managed. Precariously.

I was probably live within an hour, and my own MikroTik RB5009 router connected without any tweaking. A speedtest showed 540Mbps down (it's the 500 package). I can live with that 😀

Now I'm just waiting until my PN account shows it's all done and dusted, then I'll arrange my VOIP contract on my old number.

Thanks PN and OR 😎

Re: FF happened without a hitch :)

Most posts here relate to installations that have gone wrong, so it's nice to hear from the many thousands who have no problem. Chris the OR techie was really helpful and allowed me to take the the new cable through our roofspace as they are not allowed to work from unsheeted joists. Quite right, if these people have a fall due to breaking H&S rules they may not receive compensation and maybe be fired. The very neat install including replacing the copper with fibre over a busy road took him about two hours. Thanks again Chris!
