Thanks, @RobPN . That is true - my mobile data is off, but the phone quite often drops to Wi-Fi calling, as the nearest '3' mast is 1.1/2 -2 miles away, although it works OK if I turn Wi-Fi calling off, on the phone.

Sorry I appear to have a brain failure

You need to be connected the the hubs WIFI to make WiFi calls, nothing to do with mobile data

John, I'm going to have to go sit in a darkened room.....

I have just used my mobile phone to call another number. It's working at the moment, top left  hand on screen says Wi-Fi call.

So, it appears, like me, your indoor 'Three' coverage is at times poor, so it switches to Wi-Fi calling - not a problem. What appears there if you are out?

It is worth noting, in some cases it can be a bit hit and miss if the phone will use WiFi calling even if the mobile phone signal is weak.

To force the phone to use WiFi calling, put the phone in Airplane Mode and make sure WiFi is still turned on. This may stop text messages from being received.

You need to make sure you turn off Airplane mode when you leave home.

@Dan_the_Van I can only speak for myself, but having had Wi-Fi enabled on my 'Smarty' account for >18 months, I've never had to do that.

That is precisely what I do most of the time at home where I have variable/unreliable mobile signal strength.  It also prolongs battery life as the phone is not boosting receive/transmit power to counter the weak signal.

I can confirm that it does not prevent text messages being received.

Edit: The above is in relation to my 1pMobile (EE) service.

In the case of an iPhone, turning 'on' aeroplane mode switches off ALL radio signals, except Bluetooth, including WiFi.  See Use Airplane Mode on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch and Apple Vision Pro – Apple Support...

Is such different for other brands?

Oh so cunning!!  A further step ... logically I had expected that WiFi cannot be re-enabled whilst in aeroplane mode ... just proved one can!  Thank you for the new trick for the old dog!!

Not as such. I do not use WiFi calliing so can't be sure of this but I suspect your mobile provider has some sort of App built in so that it can connect to the internet via WiFi.

 

As such, your phones App will connect to the PN internet network the same as any other App would eg a Bank App. So you are using the PN network but it's got nothing to do with PN.
