Personally I'd be looking at whether an internal multi-port USB3 card could be fitted in the PC to give a better overall capability. It might even be cheaper as well as better.

But that option might require technical skills not readily available. Maybe @penneck is interested in that, maybe not?

Fit a card - good idea. I have the technical skills to fit a card inside my pc. What I dont have is a spare slot to fit it in.

@penneck  There is no reason why you cannot use several 6 port ( or any combination of number ) in all your available usb ports on the machine.. So, IF, like my laptop. you have three usb ports, you could use 3 6port adapters, and have 18 usb ports available .

Depending on their physical location , you could 

A.   fix them to the side, ( where convenient for use,) of the machine with blue tack

B.   Buy short ( or longer ) USB extension leads, and revert back to A. above.

For more permanent fixing you could use Araldite !.

@shutter Are your suggestions externally powered ? The power supply on an old PC may not cope with adding too many extra bits....

Fellas, this is getting a bit out of hand. All I wanted was to get a bit of clarity on whether I need to worry about getting an extender which starts off as USB3 when I only have USB2 sources and USB2 devices. As I researched, it got more complicated because some extenders can use an external power supply and some cannot (or they dont make it clear either way on this subject). If it can, does it mean I must use a psu with it? If it cannot, but one of the devices requires more power than the USB load can provide, does having a psu to that device cause problems (and what if the device requires that power supplied via the USB cable)? If I need to use Blue Tack, do I get USB2 Blue Tack or USB3 Blue Tack?

It hasn't really answered my real questions (the Blue Tack one was a joke, so dont react to it). I will just have to be careful, and hope I get it right.

@penneck   & @Champnet   All of my usb adapters are "un-powered"...i.e. they do not have ANY external PSU.

I did have an old one ( many years ago )  that had a hole for an external power input... but I have never used it.( the external power )

My Laptop, is not "that" old... probably about 5 yrs old.. it is a Asus ROG gaming laptop... if that means anything to anyone !

Just for clarity.... the External HDD  caddy is "un-powered"  ... I also have the facilty to use a USB CD player, which, also is "un-powered.   Runs directly from the USB SLOT power.  with no probalems.

@penneck Don't worry about external PSUs causing problems.

And unless you know you have some power-hungry devices just get a simple unpowered unit with no frills and see how it goes, they're cheap enough.

The only devices I have that I consider as power hungry are old-style external disk drives (rotary not solid state) and I always plug them directly into ports on the PC. One such unit actually has a sort of Y/loopback cable to plug (optionally) into a second USB port to draw more power!

As for adhesives, we have both Blu-tack and White-tack available in our household. 🤣 So I can mount both USB2 and USB3 devices without offending the colour standards Police! 😇
