This meaning Open Reach have messed me up

The Openreach FTTC cabinet electronics will have detected bursts of data loss on your connection (typically from external electrical interference),  and will have slightly lowered your maximum achievable downstream data rate to a fixed banding zone (in this case 67Mbps), this in turn increases the noise margin on the line (here 7.2dB when it should be nearer 6.0dB if line was noise free), which reduces the line's susceptibility to interference and should make your connection more reliable.

Theoretically, if your line remained noise free for 10 successive days, the Openreach DLM is supposed to automatically remove the banding and your line's potential maximum speed should be restored.  However I've never had my DLM recover from a 'banding', and have to contact my ISP two or three times a year to get Openreach to perform a "DLM reset" to clear it.

Yes, but ISPs are supposed to also apply a speed limiter on the download data sent to your FTTC cabinet, so that the data arriving at your FTTC cabinet doesn't exceed the "Data rate" shown in your modem stats, otherwise any excess incoming data will get dropped, and your computer might have to ask for a resend of missing data.

If Sky's limiter is anything like Plusnet's equivalent (known here as "Current Line Speed"), then sometimes this can get out of sync with current conditions, especially if a line has been repeatedly banded at different restricted rates. It might be that at some point you were 'banded' at 55Mb, and Sky's limiter didn't keep up with changes back to 67Mb or 73Mb or whatever, and therefore that might explain why you only got 55Mbps.

This is only a guess, as the use of these ISP rate limiters has fallen into disrepair or abandoned as the broadband connection technology has evolved and network data buffering has improved.

Re: With regret

I'm on an Openreach VDSL2  80.058Mbps/19.999Mbps connection, connected to a FTTC cabinet - the same as you are.

Your choice of ISP will have little to do with what line speeds you should be able to achieve.

So i am thinking of coming back to plus net or would this speed problem still be waiting for me if moved back to plus net i wanted to ask this before i join up again as i do miss plus net stable speed i had for years I was with madafish

Product code:Plusnet Hub Two
Serial number:+108417+2134006714
Firmware version:v0.10.00.04201-PN
Firmware updated:19-Jun-2023
Board version:R01
GUI version:1.9 16_08_2022
DSL uptime:0 Days 0 Hrs 1 Min
Data rate: 17 Mbps / 66.999 Mbps
Maximum data rate: 21.664 Mbps / 73.140 Mbps
Noise margin: 9.1 / 7.2
Line attenuation: 7.2 / 14.3
Signal attenuation: 7.1 / 14.4
VLAN id:101
Upstream error control:Off
Downstream error control:Off

With those stats, and a DLM reset to clear the 'banding', I don't see that you would have a problem if you returned to Plusnet,

certainly there is nothing there that would indicate that your Sky restricted 45..55Mbps speed tests would follow you here.

You would probably download speed test in the range 66..69Mbps depending on your connection's interleaver depth.

The PN 'Current line speed' no longer has any effect on the majority of connections, it only affects connections with static IP's.

Sky use their own network to a large extent and so its difficult to know exactly what, if any, traffic shaping they do.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: With regret

@rooky

All anyone can tell you is that the line stats you posted show that your connection appears to be working at the current time, but the download speed is currently restricted to 67Mb and requires an ISP to request that Openreach performs a "DLM reset" for your modem to find it's natural balance between sync speeds and noise margins.

You could ask Sky one last time to initiate a "DLM reset" to see whether releasing the restriction restores your connection.

If Sky push back on your request, then you now have the modem stats evidence to show them that your line is restricted.

If Sky still refuse to help you, then you'll know it is definitely time to move on to a different ISP.

Your choice of next ISP will depend on what your requirements for your internet are, for example -

  • would having a static IP address be useful ?
  • do you need low latency for gaming or zoom calls ?
  • is IPv6 important to you ?
  • do you need router features beyond the basic devices that ISP give you ?
  • would you pay more money to an ISP for better customer support ?
  • do you care about being tied in to long contract periods ?
  • are you worried that all the once useful Plusnet product features have been removed ?

If none of those things bother you, then Plusnet is probably as good as anywhere to move to.
