ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH on YouTube

My issue seems very similar to this one. When I try to open YouTube in Chrome on my WIndow 10 copmuter I get the following error:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This site can’t provide a secure connection

www.youtube.com uses an unsupported protocol.

ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH
Unsupported protocol
The client and server don't support a common SSL protocol version or cipher suite.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've tried:

  • Clearing the browser cache and cookies
  • Checking for Windows updates
  • Using a different browser (FireFox.  Same error)
  • Using a different computer (Win10 Laptop with Chrome.  Same error)
  • Connecting over WiFi and wired to the router.

Re: ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH on YouTube

Since yesterday afternoon I am also facing the same issue. My mobile phone connecting through wi-fi do not face the issue.

I have tried rebooting... as it is only this combination (chrome, firefox on wi-fi) google search views this as an issue on the server side.

Re: ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH on YouTube

Thanks for reminding me.

This issue start yesterday (9th May 2022) in the afternoon.

I've now also tried:

  • Connecting using a Linux Virtual machine running on the Window 10 host.  Same error in a FireFox browser.
  • Connecting using my mobile phone.  This seems to work but I'm not sure if that's because it's automatically switching to the mobile phone ISP.

The webpage at .........might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

Anyone else having this problem or know the solution please, have re-booted router but no luck.

Re: ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH on YouTube

I've now also tried:

  • Using my mobile phone as a wifi hotspot and connected my laptop to it.  YouTube works.

All of the investigation is suggesting the issue resides with Plusnet or my Plusnet router.

Yes.  I don't have a TV license so I use safeguard to blocked all the BBC domains.

Is that the root cause of the issue?

I'll trying turning it off and rebooting the router.  I'll have to wait until lunch because I'm in a meeting.

Re: Suddenly unable to access YouTube

I can access Youtube OK through Plusnet mobile, but for some reason
conservativewoman.co.uk
website has been blocked. Is there something strange going on?

Re: ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH on YouTube

It's odd, I wonder if YouTube has been added to some category overnight.

Raised an escalation to ask staff to have a look.

Re: Suddenly unable to access YouTube

Have not changed anything, what is safeguard and why would it suddenly switch itself on?

Running on Chrome and Win7 Home Premium on laptop, however as this is also affecting firestick, Win8 and Chrome, Samsung smartphone, I do not think this can be related to operating systems surely?
