Speed with telephone line v without

I'm in the process of renewing my contract and the assistant seemed to be trying to blind me with science.
We only have FTC in my area. He clearly wanted me to have a service with no telephone, but could only offer a 24 month contract. My current service, fibre extra, is still available and I can renew for 12 months.
He said that if I didn't have the telephone availability I would see a speed increase but could not, in my mind explain why. Can anyone explain this speed increase.
There is another matter that he would renew my contract for 12 months but quoted me a price higher than if I just hit the renew button on the web site. He really annoyed me when he said he 'didnt believe that'.
But back to the question. Why, if I ditch the telephone will I get a speed increase considering we only have FTC.

Rubbish! He was just trying to get you to give up your phone.

Re: Speed with telephone line v without

@briston Presumably, you are currently on the 40/10 service. If you switch to SoGEA (no telephone) that restriction does not apply, so your service will run 'as fast as it can' - up to 80/20.

Can you post a screenshot of the full result from https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL - obscuring your phone number/

Re: Speed with telephone line v without

Firstly, without getting into 40/10 or any other thing, a bit of history.
About 4 years ago Plusnet offered me fibre extra at less cost than fibre, even though the speed 'available' at my address suggested a maximum of 32Mb/sec. Hence fibre extra speed would not be achieved, the price was beneficial. The result however is that I always get above fibre speed, although less than fibre extra. I liken this to saying if I choose the speed matched to my address, all that happens is in throttled down.
Although I have looked at the site you mentioned I don't see where I can add a screenshot to the list

OK - you appear to be a distance from your local FTTC cab, but sight of the result would still be interesting. To add a screenshot to a post, click the icon between the 'smiley' and 'camera' at the top of the reply window (assuming you are using a desktop/laptop) and follow the prompts.

These are the steps for a smart phone or tablet

IMPORTANT: You need to be viewing the site for this to work.

With Chrome Select "Desktop site" found by tapping the three dots top right corner. Other browsers have a similar option accessing the setting might be different

Then as @jab1 instructed

Re: Speed with telephone line v without

@briston Thanks - so according to that data, you should be able to get between 35 and ~62Mb/s , and the last report on there is 44Mb/s, suggesting you have a possible problem. Which router are you using, as data from that may be useful?

@briston

Aside from the speed implications at some point you will have to give up your landline - probably this year. If it's not needed then it's no loss. If you do need a landline then you'll need to consider VOIP.

Re: Speed with telephone line v without

There is a subtlety here. I will be moving in less than a year. An agent went through all the options and staying with my contract might be advantageous when I move. As for the telephone line, I haven't used it for years, so don't need it.

Re: Speed with telephone line v without

I usually get 40Mb maybe peak to 42. I have a hub2 but configured as modem only, forget the term I did it a while ago, then wire connection to deco 5 to route through the house. Our house is a problem. The line comes in at one end and it's built somewhat solidly so getting WiFi around needs help.

Fair enough, @briston - you appear to know what you are doing.

Sight of your Hubs Broadband connection status may still be useful -

For the Hub Two -

Navigate from the Home Screen to Advanced Settings > Technical Log > Information

@jab1

It is not that easy to retrieve the technical information from a Hub Two in bridge mode.
