unchecked / Turned off smart set up ?
yes
using correct password. yourusername@plusdsl.net and the password you use to log into your member centre.
(Some hubs dependent on firmware when received do not like odd characters in the password such as %$£@&*(){_ etc so change password if you have these characters, and wait for updated firmware to occur then change back to a stronger password)
password is only letters and numbers
Try a reset/ from the hub interface and a Strong reset by pressing the reset hole in for at least 30/40 seconds,.
tried
Only plug dsl cable in when ready to connect after entering your details in and connect.
Did this
remember to turn smart set up off again after a reset

Can only suggest do a Hard reset again
and switch smart set up off.
ensure you are entering correct details.
and press the connect tab top right. after connecting the dsl cable
presume you are on ADSL or FTTC
sorry thats all I can suggest , does your connection work with the old router?

Yep - connection works with the old router.
Will try it all again (and again!!).
How do I tell what connection type I am on? I'm on unlimited fibre....

you will be on ADSL or FTTC. The Hub needed will have all yellow connections at rear,
If you are connecting with a cable ensure that the lead is connected into a yellow ethernet socket and not the Red WAN Socket if your BT Smart hub has one , (The red WAN port is for FTTP only)
All BT smart hubs work with ADSL or FTTC
Are you saving the settings by pressing the save tab when you switch smart set up off ?

Yep - they're all yellow (I made sure I bought a "084316" model).
Yep - ethernet cable was only conencted into a yellow ethernet socket.
Yep - was saving the settings when turning off Smart Set Up.

Are your plusnet log in details being retained?

I have recently installed a BT smart Hub on my Plusnet FTTC system as per Baldrick1's excellent guide with no problems.
During the research before and after doing it I have read most of this thread, but I can find no reference to my unit's firmware/software version or model number.
My units details are:- Item code 0880044, SI 7.0
Firmware version v0.11.01.10191-BT
Software variant field is blank.
Serial No. +088044+1813005131
Does anyone recognise this model?

If you do a Google search you will find plenty of references to it. The item code is 088044, not 0880044. See the serial number.

Yes, already done that.
Plenty of references, none of which tell you anything.
The only useful info I've found is the BT user guide page
https://www.bt.com/help/broadband/getting-set-up/user-guides-and-manuals-for-bt-hubs
This seems to say that Version Number SI 6.0 is a FTTC type A, and SI 7.0 is FTTC type B so mine is the latter.
The user guides only mention an item code on the FTTP version (084318); so what is the significance of all the different item codes on the FTTC s
I have had the unit installed for about a month and the only issue I have is that there has been an early morning re-boot almost every other day. I'm wondering whether this has anything to do with the software updates, as my software variant field is blank.
ie is it trying to do a software update and failing every time?

Two things to try.
1. Switch the hub off using the switch on the back, not the mains, leave this on. Leave it a minute and switch it back on. I have known the firmware to update but the new revision to remain blank.
2. Factory reset it. Make sure that you keep the switch closed for at least 30 seconds then set it up again from scratch.
When it reboots what does the Event log show as the cause? To get to it there is a tab in the Advanced/Technical log page.

I suspect that this is a dropped line due to a network problem, not a reboot.
Are Plusnet seeing disconnections?

Since March 7th, this has occurred about a dozen times in the early hours.
The longest time it has stayed connected is about 6 days.
It occurred again last night:-
